Volunteering is a great way for us to share our gifts with others who need assistance. Many people think the only way to help assist needy people or animals is to donate money to organizations that help finance them. Unfortunately, most people do not feel comfortable or able to donate to organizations monetarily.
So how can you help? Time is often the most valuable donation anyone can give. Whether you have lots to spare, or hardly any, it doesn't take much to make a difference in another's life.
Love furry friends? Look up your local animal shelters and stop in to see what kind of help they can use. Shelters and pet stores that partner with shelters are often so overrun with animals that they don't have the proper time to tend to each of them. Take a night or two a week to spend some time walking, grooming, feeding, cleaning and playing with all the furry critters waiting to find a home and a family.
Animals aren’t the only unfortunate souls who don’t have a comfortable place to sleep at night. If you’ve ever wished you could do something to assist all the homeless people in your area, now is your chance. Check out soup kitchens and homeless shelters near you and find out what kind of help they need, whether it be serving food, cleaning, laundry or countless other tasks that need to be done, the homeless people and the shelter workers will greatly appreciate your time and sacrifice.
Maybe you'd enjoy spending time with children or senior citizens who need assistance and company. Take a trip to an orphanage, a senior center or even a hospital and find out what you can do to help the ill or the lonely. Nurses and caretakers can be very overwhelmed with the amount of work they have to do and people they need to assist and can always use an extra hand. Some of the people in their care don't receive much company so a helping hand and simple smile are greatly welcomed.
Whomever you would enjoy assisting, rest assured they will be incredibly grateful for your time and appreciate you giving so selflessly for their benefit. You don't need to dip into your pockets to help make a difference in the lives of others. Spread some cheer around the world freely by taking some time out of your week to spend on someone else. Happy volunteering!
